I saw a nifty way of doing smooth gradients in graphite once using graphite powder. I thought I would try it out, so I bought some graphite lubricant at a hardware store, and started experimenting. Even though it didn't work the way I had hoped, it was interesting enough in an abstract sort of way that I thought it was worth a look and put it in my regular gallery. The lubricant had some 1 mm or larger flakes in it, and even after rubbing it around they just didn't stick to the paper in a meaningful way. Instead of using fixative on it (nasty smelly stuff) I photographed it.
